Groundwork & Partnership

Groundwork at Enders Farm is about far more than controlling the horse, it is about learning to control oneself, become fully present in both mind and body, and develop the awareness necessary to communicate clearly and fairly with the horse. Horses naturally respond to balanced, confident, and self-aware individuals, and true partnership begins long before stepping into the saddle.

At Enders Farm, riders learn how horses think, learn, and respond, developing communication through timing, consistency, body awareness, and emotional control rather than force or constant correction. The goal is not simple obedience, but a willing and thoughtful partnership built on trust and understanding.

Groundwork is an important foundation for new riders, but it is equally valuable for experienced equestrians and competitive riders. Many people in the horse industry were never taught proper groundwork, despite its direct impact on riding, problem-solving, confidence, and overall horsemanship.

Groundwork also creates meaningful opportunities for horses and humans during periods when riding may not be possible. It can be especially beneficial for horses recovering from illness or injury, riders rebuilding confidence, or individuals who can no longer ride but still want to develop connection and communication with the horse.

A major focus of this program is helping horses and riders work through challenges that arise under saddle or in everyday handling. Many behavioral, communication, and confidence issues can be greatly improved through thoughtful groundwork exercises that help both horse and human better understand one another.

All groundwork sessions are individualized and adapted to the current needs, experience level, confidence, and goals of both horse and rider. Some sessions may focus on confidence and emotional awareness, while others may center around problem-solving, communication, or skill development.

Groundwork sessions may include:

  • Round pen exercises focused on communication, responsiveness, and connection
  • Leading, catching and handling skills
  • Ground-driving and preparation for riding
  • Confidence-building and desensitization
  • Obstacle course work and problem-solving exercises
  • Body awareness and communication development
  • Young horse preparation and foundation work
  • Rider confidence and emotional awareness development

Groundwork sessions are guided by the horseโ€™s progress rather than a strict clock. Some sessions may conclude earlier when the horse has reached a productive learning point, allowing training to end on a positive and thoughtful note.

We believe strong horsemanship begins with understanding yourself first, because horses respond honestly to the energy, clarity, and leadership we bring to them.
